IRMTNZ is deeply saddened by the death of Katherine Austin, one of Aotearoa’s leading pianists, and an Honorary Fellow of the Institute.
Katherine studied at the University of Auckland, gaining MMus in piano performance under teachers Janetta McStay and Bryan Sayer before pursuing further study at the Royal College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Returning to New Zealand in the 1990s she quickly established a career as a chamber musician both here and abroad. She toured frequently for Chamber Music New Zealand and was perhaps best known as a member of the New Zealand Chamber Soloists. Katherine also performed as a concerto soloist with several orchestras including the NZSO and APO.
As Head of Piano Studies at the University of Waikato Conservatorium of Music for more than 20 years, Katherine influenced many young musicians; she was also an examiner for NZMEB and was frequently called upon to adjudicate competitions. IRMTNZ members and our students benefited from her generous advice and encouragement in masterclasses, most recently at our 2024 national conference.
Katherine’s vivacious spirit and innate musicality will be missed. We extend our deepest condolences to her family and friends.
Katherine’s funeral will be held 11am Monday 2 February at St Matthew-in-the-City, 132 Hobson St, Auckland. There will be music from 10.30am as people arrive and find their seats.
